Best eSIM for the Balkans: Stay Connected on the Peaks of the Balkans and Beyond

Best eSIM for the Balkans

One of the most common questions we receive from guests before they travel is: “What SIM card should I use in the Balkans?”

Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro are not members of the European Union, which means your regular EU roaming plan will not cover you here. The simplest solution for most travellers in 2026 is an eSIM — a digital SIM card you set up on your smartphone before you leave home. No queues, no language barriers, and no plastic card to lose on a mountain pass.

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic chip, you scan a QR code to activate a mobile data plan — usually within a few minutes. It works on all iPhones from XR/XS (2018) onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3+, and most Android phones from 2019 onwards. If you are unsure, search your phone model followed by “eSIM compatible” before purchasing a plan.

EU Roaming Does Not Apply Here

Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro are outside the EU. The “Roam Like at Home” rule does not apply — many European travellers are surprised by charges of €2–10 per MB the moment they cross from Croatia or Greece into Albania or Montenegro. An eSIM gives you a fixed, predictable price with no surprises.

There is also good news for those preferring a local SIM. Since July 2021, a Western Balkans roaming agreement means a SIM from any of the six countries in the region — Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Bosnia & Herzegovina — works across all of them at no extra cost.

Recommended eSIM Providers

These are the most reliable options for tourists visiting the Balkans. Prices and coverage do change, so always confirm the details on the provider’s website before purchasing.

Airalo — Most Popular Globally

Airalo is one of the world’s largest eSIM platforms, trusted by over 20 million travellers. Plans start from $4.00 for 1 GB over 3 days. For the Balkans, they offer three regional plans — Eurolink, Discover, and Discover+. Kosovo is only included in the Discover+ plan, so make sure to select that one if Kosovo is part of your itinerary. Best for travellers combining the Balkans with EU countries on the same trip.

Holafly — Best for Unlimited Data

Holafly offers unlimited data plans covering Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro. Prices start from $9.50 per day for Albania and $9.90 per day for Kosovo, with longer plans working out cheaper. It connects to Vodafone Albania and local Kosovo carriers. Note that hotspot sharing is limited to 1 GB per day. Best for heavy data users who prefer not to monitor their usage.

Nomad — Best for Kosovo Coverage

Nomad has a dedicated Balkans regional plan that explicitly confirms coverage in Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro, connecting to the IPKO network in Kosovo. Plans start from $9 for 1 GB over 7 days. Note that their standard Europe plan does not include the Western Balkans — select the Balkans plan specifically. Best for hikers on the Peaks of the Balkans trail.

Saily — Best Budget Option

Built by the NordVPN team, Saily offers plans from $3.99 for Albania and $5.99 for Kosovo, with a built-in ad blocker and web protection included. One eSIM can be used across multiple countries. Coverage varies by plan, so verify that Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro are all listed before purchasing. Best for budget-conscious travellers who also value digital security.

How Much Data Do You Need?

For most hikers on the Peaks of the Balkans, 3–5 GB is enough to cover maps, WhatsApp, and light browsing. If you use social media, email, and occasional video calls, 10–15 GB will keep you comfortable. For remote work, streaming, or sharing a hotspot with others, an unlimited plan is the better choice.

Signal on the Trail

Coverage is reliable in towns and villages across all three countries. On high mountain passes and in remote valleys, signal can be weak or absent — this is true for all providers and is simply a result of the terrain. The best preparation is to download offline maps on Google Maps or Maps.me for each country before you set off.

A Few Tips Before You Travel

Set up your eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before you depart — do not leave it until you land. Always check that Kosovo (country code XK) is explicitly listed in your plan, as it is often missing from standard Europe packages. Keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS, and use the eSIM for data. And finally, download your offline maps before entering any remote mountain areas.
