An Albanian’s house is the dwelling of God and the guest.’ Of God and the guest, you see. So before it is the house of its master, it is the house of one’s guest. The guest, in an Albanian’s life, represents the supreme ethical category, more important than blood
relations. One may pardon the man who spills the blood of one’s father or of one’s son, but never the blood of a guest.” This quote from Ismajl Kadare’s book Broken April perfectly summarizes the importance of the guest in Albanian tradition. Experience traditional Kosovo-Albanian hospitality for yourself with this opportunity to stay with the Nikqi family in the village of Reka e Allakes in the heart of Rugova. Upon your arrival, you will be served lunch prepared directly from the family’s land, which is home to 20 cows. In the afternoon, you can either hike to the base of Hajla (2100 meters, approx. 2 hours) or all the way to the peak (2400 m, approx. 4 hrs). Though their english and swiss germanis limitted you will be able to understand everything.
That evening, you can enjoy the company and delicious food of your hosts Mustafe and Fetije once more. The guesthouse is basic, but clean and has a shared bathroom. The family can accommodate vegetarian or vegan diets upon request.
