HIKE TO HAJLA PEAK
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Distance: 10 kilometers
Time: Full day or two days
Price: 25 euro per person (groups of 4 or more), overnight accommodation not included
Hike begins from the quaint village of Pepiq. Nestled in the Accursed Mountains at around 1000 meters, the village appears to be frozen in time. The walk from the village starts with an easy trail, which offers open views of the mountains and the city of Peja.
The 7 hour hike will take you to the base of Hajla Mountain (2403 meters), which forms the administrative and natural border between Kosovo and Montenegro. From here, guests have the option to rest for a short time or even overnight at the nearby mountain hut, or continue up the steep trail to reach the peak. Though challenging, the climb to the summit will reward you with 360 degree views of the mountainous Kosovo and Montenegrin sides of the border, making clear why Montenegro earned the moniker “black mountains.”
The newly-constructed mountain hut at the foot of the mountain offers basic amenities, including a roof, clean water, and cooking facilities. If you prefer, you can also camp at the base of the mountain using your own tent or one rented from BNA.
