  • May 9, 2017 THE SCIENCE OF WHY YOU SHOULD SPEND YOUR MONEY ON EXPERIENCES, NOT THINGS

Most people are in the pursuit of happiness. There are economists who think happiness is the best indicator of the health of a society. We know that money can make you happier, though after your basic needs are met, it doesn’t make you that much happier. But one of the biggest questions is how to allocate our money, which is (for most of us) a limited resource. There’s a very logical assumption that most people make when spending their money: that because a physical object will last longer, it will make us happier for a longer time than a one-off experience like a concert or vacation. According to recent research, it turns out that assumption is completely wrong. “One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” says Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University who has been studying the question of money and happiness for over two decades. “We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed. But only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.” So rather than buying the latest iPhone or a new BMW, Gilovich suggests you’ll get more happiness spending money on experiences […]

  • THE MOST STRIKING ASPECT OF EUROPE’S NEWEST NATION: ITS NORMALC

On display at the Ethnographic Museum in Kosovo’s capital of Pristina is a lady’s wooden shoe with a sole covered with intricate carvings and rich inlays of mother-of-pearl. It dates from the 18th century, but any woman would be proud to wear it, then or now. • March 14, 2017 SIZES UP THE ACCURSED MOUNTAINS. BUT DO NOT LET THE NAME MISLEAD YOU. THIS BROODING, UNSPOILT RANGE OF ALBANIAN PEAKS ARE ‘BLESSED’

Epic Walks: the Accursed Mountains (The Peaks of Balkans), Albania James Ottery  Do not let the name mislead you. This brooding, unspoilt range of Albanian peaks might be known as the Accursed Mountains, but – when you get in among their mighty slopes – “blessed” may seem the better adjective. For hikers who like their trails remote, their scenery craggy and their hospitality Balkan-strength, this eight-day trek stands as one of the region’s greatest summer adventures. Albania in any form is a superb travel destination – it is proud, beautiful and rich in tradition – but as somewhere to walk, it is downright unforgettable. Rolling hills: The Accursed Mountain ranges in Europe The Dinaric Alps, of which the Accursed Mountains form a part, are just a few hours north from the whirl of Tirana, the capital. Towering grey rock faces soar above flower-specked meadows. Icy rivers thunder through green valleys. Shepherds’ quiet paths snake over mountain passes, through beech copses and past sun-struck farmsteads. Europes top mountain hike? This is European hiking as it used to be, heading deep into an isolated but utterly magnificent corner of the continent. And though summer rain is rare, the weather can on occasion […]
